The primary focal point of ‘Walking on Water’ is obviously the elephant completely covered in a variety of hotly coloured marks. The elephant is pictured walking on water in a church interior – in fact it is ‘the elephant in the room’. Two paintings (Allegory of Faith + The Proposition – both works of mine) hang on the back wall of the church.
Christ is said to have walked on water... in the Hindu religion, the elephant is regarded as a wise god. Elephants in India are often seen highly decorated in brightly coloured marks, patterns and symbols.
Walking on Water references religious and cultural differences and similarities... and what faith can lead us to believe.
