‘The Red Anatomy Lesson’ is based on Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp’ (see above). In my version, Dr Tulp has exited the scene and what was a male cadaver has been replaced by the body of Manet’s Olympia and the head of Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson – an anatomy lesson now looks and feels like a very odd art student’s life class.
The large areas of red function as a pointer to the work being a much changed and contemporary artwork. What remains of the figurative elements of the original paintings have become the primary areas of focus for the viewer.
