    In the early hours of 29 May 1940 the destroyer Wakeful was torpedoed and sank in 15 seconds with the loss of 600 lives.



    The Poppies in ‘Dunkirk’ represents not only the 68,111 that died or were captured but the 338,226 soldiers who escaped to fight another day. 


    The 126 merchant seamen died during the evacuation trying to help those stranded on the beaches. 


    1,000 Dunkirk citizens died during air raids on the first day.
