Abraxas = Ancient Greek God... ‘Supreme Deity / Guardian of the Universe’... that took the form of a horse.
Coulrophobia = Fear of Clowns
Both the horse and the clown are decorated in unreadable signs and symbols. Abraxas and Coulrophobia are almost opposites in their symbolism (Guardian Horse God versus an Embodiment of Fear). They stand frozen as though they are in an on-stage tableau.
A number of my artworks include colourfully decorated horses and clowns set in starkly white compositions, absent of context... and others in which they appear set in highly colourful architectural environments analogous to dreams. All of these works both entertain the eyes and unsettle the imagination. For me, these images reference unknown maladies, dreams, psychosis and things that go ‘bump in the night’.
